EXSI 3398.03                                     INTERNSHIP IN EXERCISE SCIENCE                FALL 2009

 

 

¨       CLASSROOM:  Weir 206 (Office)                                                          TIME:  TBA with each student

 

 

¨       “The Internship in Exercise Science” is designed to provide practical experiences to the non-teacher certification Exercise Science major. The course may be repeated once. EXSI 3398.03 is a three-credit hour upper-level course, and students must have earned 75 credit hours toward their degree.

Textbook:       There is no required textbook.

 

 

Materials:       Students in EXSI 3398.03 are expected to make use of a notebook or journal (hardcopy or electronic) to record daily internship experiences. Students are also expected to have access to, and use, a computer for word processing, spreadsheet creation, and research.

 

 

Internship:      Students must accumulate between 40 – 50 contact hours at the Internship site.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

COURSE  DESCRIPTION

 

EXSI 3398, a three (3) credit hour course for majors in the Exercise Science program, provides students practical experiences which supplement the Exercise Science curriculum. The Fall 2009 Internship in EXSI serves to further the student’s experiences in areas that may not specifically be covered in the standard EXSI curriculum. Possible internship locations for this term include a Physical Therapy Center, the Kerrville Fitness Center, the Exercise Physiology Lab on campus, and the Department of Athletics on campus. Additional student/faculty-suggested sites, on- or off-campus, will also be considered.

 

 

 

 

COURSE  OBJECTIVES

 

 At the completion of EXSI 3398, the student should …

 

1.          exhibit a basic knowledge of policies and procedures involved in the day-to-day operations of the pertinent internship site. (Outcome #5)

 

2.          be able to critically evaluate site-specific techniques, procedures, and their proper usage.

(Outcome #5)

 

3.          understand the various methods of on-site client management.  (Outcome #6)

 

4.          specifically design reasonable motivation “tricks” for recalcitrant clients, especially in therapy/fitness locations.  (Outcome #6)

 

5.          understand the daily rigor associated with the specific internship site. (Outcomes #5 & #6)

 

6.          appreciate the connections of the EXSI curriculum as it relates to the internship opportunity. (Outcomes #1, #2, and #3)

 

7.          be able to successfully summarize the Internship experience in a polished presentation utilizing PowerPoint or some other software presentation program.  (Outcome #4)
