Exercise Science involves the study of scientific applications to human
movement and performance. Movement provides the primary means to all
accomplishments and is one of the most important human endeavors. The
study of Exercise Science seeks to determine the physiological,
psychological and sociological factors influencing simple movement
and/or exercise. The Exercise Science program at Schreiner University
emphasizes the application of these factors to human performance.
Schreiner
University offers courses leading to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) (with or
without teaching certification) or
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree with a major in Exercise Science.
Your choice of degree plan is important as it may affect your
job-hunting success or graduate school application. Students
planning to enter coaching/teaching careers, recreation and leisure or
other more socially oriented careers are advised to pursue a B.A., while
students seeking science-based careers such as cardiac rehabilitation,
exercise physiology or biomechanics, may be more successful with the
B.S. degree.
Degree plans have at least three
sections:
Core Courses
represent those that all students must take to complete a degree plan,
and are considered essential in molding well-rounded students. The
core will be different for a bachelor of arts than for a bachelor of
science, but will include such classes as Freshman English,
Fine Arts, History and other liberal arts offerings.
Collateral Courses
present basic knowledge necessary to successfully complete major course.
These are not major courses, but are just as important in rounding out a
student's knowledge of their chosen field.
Major Courses
provide the most field-specific material for a chosen
major. Although the content varies widely, each class is deemed
necessary to a successful career in the field.
